For many will come. One of these was Simon Magus, who in the Acts (c. viii. v. 10.) is mentioned as calling himself the power of God; hence the apostle S. John (1 ep. i i . 18,) says, and as you have heard that Antichrist cometh, even now there are become many Antichrists. By Antichrists I understand heretics, who, under the name of Christ, teach doctrines different from Christ; neither is there any reason for us to be surprised, if many be seduced, since our Lord declares that many will be seduced. S. Jerom. . . . This alone will be sufficient for us to know the false doctrines taught by Antichrist, when they assure us that they are Christ; for we do not read in any part that Christ said so of himself. The miracles he performed, the doctrines he taught, and the virtues he on every occasion exhibited, were proofs sufficient to convince us that he was the Christ. There is need of the assistance of God to overcome the snares laid for us by hypocrisy. Origen.—Among these impostors were one Theodas, (Acts v. 36,) the impious Egyptian, (Acts xxi. 38,) Judas of Galilee, Menander, and several others who preceded the destruction of Jerusalem; but many more will precede the destruction of the world. This therefore is the first sign, the seduction of many souls from the true faith by heresies, and is common to both events. CHAP. II. VER. 1 . Lying teachers among you, some of which were already come, and  many more were to follow, who shall bring in sects,* (heresies) leading to perdition, and deny the Lord who bought them, denying the divinity of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer; such were the disciples of Simon, and many after them.

October 25, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) — Pope Francis will travel to Lund, Sweden, next week to assist in the launch of a yearlong commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s nailing of his 95 theses to the door of the castle church of Wittenberg on October 31, 1517.
In a lead-up event at the Vatican on October 13, the Pope received a group of 1,000 Lutherans and Catholics from Germany in the Vatican’s Paul VI hall and addressed them from the stage where a statue of Luther was erected. The sight came as a shock to many Catholics because Luther was excommunicated and his theses rejected by Pope Leo X in 1520. The split he caused in Christianity remains as one of the most damaging in the Church’s 2,000-year history.
At the meeting, Francis reinforced his admonition from earlier this month against converting people. Weeks after saying it is a “very grave sin against ecumenism” for Catholics to try to convert Orthodox Christians, Pope Francis told the pilgrims “it is not licit” to “convince [non-Christians] of your faith.” In that meeting, the pope also offered a novel definition of “lukewarm,” which according to Pope Francis is when Christians “are keen to defend Christianity in the West on the one hand but on the other are averse to refugees and other religions.” [Insanity!]
The word ‘lukewarm’ has significant meaning to Christians because of the words of Christ revealed in St. John’s Revelation (3:16):  “Because thou art lukewarm,  and neither cold, not hot, I will vomit thee out of my mouth.” The common interpretation of the verses was to condemn the practice of picking and choosing among the Christ’s teachings rather than holding to all of them. As the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops says, “Half-hearted commitment to the faith is nauseating to Christ.”
In answer to a question about what he likes about the Lutheran Church, the pope said, “I really like good Lutherans, Lutherans who really practice their faith in Jesus Christ. What I don’t like are lukewarm Catholics and lukewarm Lutherans.” Italian daily La Stampa’s Vatican Insider quotes the pope as saying it’s a “contradiction” when Christians “are keen to defend Christianity in the West on the one hand but on the other are averse to refugees and other religions.”
The Pope’s application of Christ’s strong condemnation to those who would be averse to other religions is perhaps a warning to those who would object to his coming praise for Luther scheduled for October 31. Swedish Catholic professor Clemens Cavallin points out in an essay on the upcoming celebration with Pope Francis in Lund that the common prayer service to be used has a very positive view of Luther.
“The text,” he says, “paints a picture of Luther as a religious hero who found the way to a more true form of Catholicism.” Cavallin notes that in the liturgical guide, the Common Prayer, a section called Thanksgiving, is intended to express, “our mutual joy for the gifts received and rediscovered in various ways through the renewal and impulses of the Reformation. After the prayer of thanksgiving, the whole assembly joins in singing thanks for and praise of God’s work.”
“The ecumenical journey enables Lutherans and Catholics to appreciate together Martin Luther’s insight into and spiritual experience of the gospel of the righteousness of God, which is also God’s mercy,” the text says.
The section concludes with the following prayer of gratitude:
Thanks be to you, O God, for the many guiding theological and spiritual insights that we have all received through the Reformation. [blasphemy!!] Thanks be to you for the good transformations and reforms that were set in motion by the Reformation or by struggling with its challenges. Thanks be to you [God] for the proclamation of the gospel that occurred during the Reformation and that since then has strengthened countless people to live lives of faith in Jesus Christ. Amen.

Ver. 18. All power is given to me. The Arians object that the power which Christ had, is said to be given him by another. The Catholics answer, that Christ, as man, received this power from God. 2ndly. It may also be said, that the eternal Son, though he be equal, and be the same God with the Father, yet he proceeds and receives all from the Father. (Witham) --- See here the warrant and commission of the apostles and their successors, the bishops and pastors of Christ's Church. He received from his Father, all power in heaven and in earth: and in virtue of this power he sends them (even as his Father sent him, St. John xx. 21.) to teach and disciple, matheteuein, not one, but all nations, and instruct them in all truths: and that he may assist them effectually in the execution of this commission, he promises to be with them, (not for three or four hundred years only) but all days, even to the consummation of the world. How then could the Catholic Church go astray? having always with her pastors, as is here promised, Christ himself, who is the way, the truth, and the life. (St. John xiv. 6.) (Challoner) --- Some hence infer that Jesus Christ, according to his human nature, was sovereign Lord of the whole world; but more properly this may be taken of his spiritual power, such as regards the salvation of souls. For Jesus Christ says to Pilate,my kingdom is not of this world. This spiritual power, Jesus Christ communicated in part to his apostles and their successors in the ministry, as to his vicars: As my Father hath sent me, so I send you. Whatsoever you shall loose upon earth, shall be loosed also in heaven: behold here the power both in heaven and earth. (Estius)
St. Matthew - Chapter 28: 19
19.” Going, therefore, teach ye all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son. And of the Holy Ghost;”
Ver. 19.  Teach all nations. In St. Mark we read, going into the whole world, preach to every creature, that is capable of it; not only to the Jews, but to all nations throughout thewhole world, baptizing them, &c. The Anabaptists pretend to shew from this place, that none are to be baptized, unless they be first taught and instructed. This is true, as to persons who are already come to an age, in which they are capable of being instructed before their baptism. But according to the tradition and constant doctrine of the Catholic Church, received also by the pretended Reformed Churches, new born children are to be baptized before they are capable of instruction: nor can they enter into the kingdom of heaven without baptism. --- In the name of the Father, &c. We are made Christians in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: we profess to believe, and hope for our salvation, by believing, hoping, serving, and adoring the same three divine Persons, from whence the Fathers prove the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost to be one God, and equal in all perfections. (Witham) --- Had Christ only said, Lo! I am with you all days; it might, in that case, be limited to the natural lives of the apostles; but as He moreover adds,even to the consummation of the world, it must necessarily be extended to their successors in the ministry, till the end of time. (Estius) --- By these words Go, teach, he gives them the power of teaching not only what relates to faith, but also what is necessarily connected with piety and a holy conversation. For we see added a further explanation,teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; which words, beyond all doubt, must be referred to the precepts of a holy life. How egregiously then must those men be deceived, who infer from the words teach all nations, that faith alone will suffice. What follows,baptizing them, shews another part of the pastoral functions, which consists in the administration of the sacraments. Hence also all heretics are refuted, who pretend to affirm that all ecclesiastical ministry consists in barely delivering the word. (Estius, in different location)
St. Matthew - Chapter 28: 20
 
20. “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.”
 
Ver. 20. Behold I am with you all days, even to the end of the world, embraces two points necessary for the Church; viz. integrity of doctrine, and sanctity of life; for, if either of these should be wanting to the Church, it might then be justly said, that she had been left and abandoned by Christ, her Spouse. (Estius) --- Jesus Christ will make good his promise: 1. by always dwelling in the hearts of the faithful; 2. by his sacramental presence in the holy Eucharist; 3. by his providential care, and constant protection to his holy Catholic Church. These last six lines of St. Matthew's gospel, says the bright luminary of France, Bossuet, most clearly demonstrate the infallibility and indefectibility of the One, (Unity) Holy, Catholic Church, which all are commanded to hear and obey.

Holydays and some history

A very dear Catholic friend sent this my way. A good reminder why we have never celebrated Halloween nor had anything to do with Santa or the Easter Bunny!!!

Halloween symbolizes the de-Catholicism of the Western World. It typifies a phenomenon of the Anglo-Saxon world in which Catholic feasts, especially Christmas and Easter, became paganized. Christmas is associated with Santa Claus and Christmas trees, while Easter has its rabbits and new outfits. The departure from Christianity is most noteworthy in the time period from 1941 to the 1980's when the organized TV networks presented all Easter shows with non-Christian events or pagan symbols.

Halloween is even worse, thanks in large measure to the Protestant revolt of the 16th Century. On October 31st, 1517, the Vigil of the Feast of All Saints, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the Church door of the Castle of Wittenberg, Germany. This was the birthday of Protestantism. Protestant = to protest.


Martin Luther dropped the Feast of All Saints because he denied the right of the Church to give absolution from sin in the name of Christ. He denied the veneration of saints and called it superstition. It became a day of mockery of the saints. Both Luther and John Calvin (the genius behind Protestantism) declared, "There are no saints in heaven." Pope Leo X condemned Luther 3 years later, but by 1546, Luther's death, one third of Europe was lost to the Catholic Church.


The English language is not a vehicle for Catholicism, as we will see in the name, "Halloween," which, in a religious context, is almost a blasphemy of All Hallows E'en. "Hallows" is Old English for saints. "E'en" is an abbreviation for evening or the vigil before the feast, so "All Hallows E'en" means "All Saints Evening." It is the Vigil of All Hallows Mass, November 1st, a feast observed by Roman Catholics.


Pope Gregory III assigned this day when he consecrated a chapel in St. Peter's Basilica. His successor extended the feast to the whole Church. By the end of the Middle Ages, the celebration of All Hallows Eve was an established part of the Roman Catholic Church. After the Protestant Revolt, the Protestants rejected the Vigil of All Saints, Christmas and Easter. Where these feasts returned, it was because of the Catholic Church.


Students of folklore believe that the non-Christian customs of Halloween precede the origins of Christianity. They believe the day originated from the Harvest Festival in Rome for the goddess Pomona, and in Germany, Scotland and Ireland for duodism. Their belief was founded upon the pre-Christian pagan symbols of witches, black cats and skeletons, along with traditional nuts and apples, which were used for this feast.


With the feasts of All Saints on November 1 and All Souls on November 2, the Church celebrates the "harvest," the heavenly harvest of souls. The Church was "quite" successful in replacing the pagan with the Christian.


However, North of the Alps (that is, Germany, some parts of Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, England, Scotland, Whales, and Ireland) the missionary effort had not been as effective as in the Mediterranean or African worlds. We see that in 325 AD, the first general council of the Church, the Council of Nicea, condemned the heresies of Arius who denied Christ's divinity. A sizable minority of bishops retracted their rejection of Arius by retaining Arian teachings in their territories. These bishops were from the northern countries noted above. The most devastating heresies have come from these countries. The Irish even became militant in their heresies.


When Henry VIII suppressed Catholicism under persecution in England, hidden paganism began to arise. Spirits of the departed were said to visit their relatives to seek warmth and good cheer as winter approached. Threshing and food preparation for the winter season became the focus of attention. In England, Ireland, Scotland, Whales and the Shetland Islands bonfires on hilltops were lit on the evening of October 31st. Halloween games were played, including divination by pulling kale, throwing a shoe over the house, and placing stones and nuts in the fire. The church porch was considered a reliable place to learn future events.


The pagan practices, then, began in Great Britain, spread to Ireland and then to the United States.

Pranks and tricks centered in Britain, the once largest empire in history. Immigrants to the United States from English-dominated countries brought the pagan practices that have been in vogue since the time of Christ.

Halloween is a return of unqualified paganism to lands and cultures where Protestantism has de-Catholicized nations and removed the clearest sign of a Catholic mentality: the veneration of the saints.

All Saints Day commemorates all those who have reached heaven, not just canonized saints.

November 2 remembers all the souls who are still suffering in purgatory.

Our responsibility is to restore All Hallows Eve to its Catholic place on the Church's calendar.

Know the saints.
Read one small book on the saints.
Promote their writings.
Know what they have to say.
Publicize the lives of the saints.
