Preface
“My Catholic Faith” is prepared for those who desire to have a concise knowledge of the doctrines and practices of the Catholic Church. It is a complete catechism, useful for ready reference, for it takes up in a clear and practical manner the questions and subjects that are likely to arouse the interest of the general reader, whether Catholic or non-Catholic.
Catechists will find “My Catholic Faith” invaluable in their work of teaching both adults and children. At the same time, “My Catholic Faith” is designed to serve as a textbook of catechism for the use of Philippine high schools.
Discussion of each topic has been limited to one page. Opposite each page, the topic is illustrated, in order to help make the explanations clearer, and fix the doctrines in the mind of the reader. The illustrations will be found to be among the best features of this work. They are the result of long and careful selection, and materially increase the usefulness of the book. Undoubtedly, interest in the different topics will be awakened by the illustration accompanying them; thus many persons will be led to learn the doctrines in the explanation as a consequence of interest in the pictures.
“My Catholic Faith” follows the strictly logical sequence in subject-matter: (1) The Credo, containing what we must know and believe; (2) The Commandments of God and the Church, containing what we must do; and (3) The Sacraments, or means of grace that we use for the attainment of our salvation. It is not, however, necessary to follow this sequence when reading, teaching, or studying this catechism. “My Catholic Faith” is so constructed that one group of topics can be taken up independently of the rest.
Generally, the doctrinal part, the Credo, which is here presented first, is more difficult for young people to understand than the Commandments or the Sacraments. For this reason, catechists and teachers may postpone the first part until after the second or the third has been thoroughly considered. In an appendix are included graded plans for the use of the different years, when “My Catholic Faith” is used as textbook.
“My Catholic Faith” is printed in large and small type. The portions in large type contain the essentials. The parts in small type contain examples, quotations from Scripture, or enlargements of the subject dealt with.
Special attention was paid to the selection of appropriate texts from the Bible. These will familiarize the reader with the Bible, and effectively prove the falsity of the anti-Catholic charge that the Church discourages the reading of Holy Scripture.
Two subjects of utmost importance are almost completely dealt with in “My Catholic Faith”: The Catholic Church (Lessons No. 35 to 57) and the Sacrifice of the Mass (Lessons No. 148 to 160).
In preparing this catechism, we have tried to make it as practical and up-to-date as possible, not only in the manner of treating the subject, but also in the topics selected. All of the questions which modern people seek information, such as Evolution, Science and the Bible, Church and State, Duties of Citizens, Divorce, Capital and Labor, are clearly taken up.
It is our earnest hope that “My Catholic Faith” will help our beloved Catholic Filipinos to know their religion exactly and to practice it according to the teachings of the Church and its Divine Founders.
